  The History of Cox Mowers

Owen CoxThe Cox story is one of typical Aussie ingenuity and real engineering excellence.

It began in 1953 (the year that the TV series "Gunsmoke" began), nearly 50 years ago, when the late Owen Cox, engineer and inventor, founded a company to produce petrol and electric driven air compressors under the brand "Air Rite".

The success of these innovative products led Owen to expand his foundry and engineering production base and move into manufacturing a small, two-stroke outboard motor for the leisure boating market.

The Mow-MobileAt the same time, the new petrol powered lawn mowers were just starting to revolutionise home gardening. Owen immediately realised their potential and developed and launched his Mowmaster again, an outstanding success. Through his own retail outlet, Owen kept in direct contact with his customers and so was able to respond quickly to the rapidly-changing market.

His intuition led him to the next logical innovation... and the reason you are now reading this brochure. Realising that push mowers were of little use on larger properties, Owen pioneered the concept of ride-on mowers and, by the late 1950's, was producing and marketing the Cox Mow-Mobile - the very first Australian designed & built ride-on mower.

Factory FloorFrom that point, Owen Cox & Co. grew strongly, backed by the reputation of building quality and reliability into every product they manufactured. With that growth came the need to move to larger premises in the Brisbane suburb of Woolloongabba in 1968.

Some Cox people today well remember the absolute commitment to quality and engineering integrity that had become the hallmark of Cox products.

Again, Cox outgrew these premises and moved to a new factory at Acacia Ridge in 1994.

Laser cutting technologyAmongst many innovations, Owen Cox's unique friction drive system remains at the heart of every Cox mower that rolls out of this much-expanded and modernised plant today.

Equally, Owen Cox's commitment to quality and customer-driven, practical product innovation remains the way we do business today ... and into the future.
